COMPOSITION SPOTLIGHT ~ by Jack Senzig
(Each week we look at one or two of the best choral works posted in the Composition Showcase here on ChoralNet. This is where we store a treasure trove of works that your choirs will love to sing and your audiences will love to hear.)
I Am The Vine by David Madeira SATB divisi a cappella
Level: Advanced Church Choir or High School
Uses: General Concert Use
Program Themes: Bare Fruit!, Entwined!, Dwelling Paces
This Piece Would Program Well With: Christmas Memories by Rosephanye Powell available at JWPepper
David Madeira audibly turns this text from John:15 into vines and branches. There is a little something in it for everyone. The audience gets short lovely phrases, the choir and director get a middle section with more harmonic interest and the organist gets to fill out her communion card while various parts sing pedal tones.
David Madeira uses a pricing system that is becoming more and more common. You pay $20 for unlimited copies for your ensemble. As a conductor I make an enormous effort to honor copyright law but often find myself in slight moral dilemmas. I often find I need a couple more copies for one reason or another. Thank-you David for taking away one of the many stresses conductors experience on a daily basis! I also like how his website is set up with score, audio and PayPal buttons all in one place. I would like to see more of the score available, but I understand why composers share partial PDFs online.
