(An excerpt from the Choral Journal article “New Hints on Choreography,” by Audrey Grier)
Choreography is a vital part of the Swing and Show Choir Movement in the United States. If taught properly and if precisely executed, it can enhance the total music program. At no time, however, should choreography take precedence over good choral sound. Any movement or choreography that visually complements the aural, can add excitement and new visual vitality to the established choral program. The added dimension of movement and choreography gives a new perspective to the choral music program. What was once only heard can now be seen. Musical pictures can be painted and musical concepts put into motion. Choral spaces can be filled with movement, without detracting from the overall desired result of a beautiful choral sound. The simplest moves, properly placed and executed, can effectively enhance the mood established by the song being performed.
The following Hints and Bibliography will help in establishing movement and choreography as a valid supplement and complement to the total choral music program. READ the entire article on page 31.
