COMPOSITION SPOTLIGHT ~ by Jack Senzig
Welcome back to the Composition Spotlight. Each week we look at a piece or two of the best choral works posted in the Composition Showcase here on ChoralNet. This is where we store a treasure trove of works that your choirs will love to sing and your audiences will love to hear.
Level: Advanced High School or higher
Uses: General Concert Use
Program Themes: Songs With Scat Singing, Island Songs, The Wheel of Fate
This Piece Would Program Well With: Manhattan Transfer in Concert arr. Jerry Nowak from JWPepper and Sheet Music Plus.
What a way to start out your year! Get your singers performing this uptempo extremely fun to sing song. “Hula macka doo” and “O Dicko decko dandy” roll off the tongue and into your soul. Donald Patriquin penned this piece and Ae Fond Kiss on the Composition Showcase as a set called Scottish Contrasts. Perform one or both. Island Spinning Song is a barnstormer for early in the year or as the finale to any general concert. The vocal lines are light and energetic while the piano supports and adds a rocking/spinning feel. Consider programming this with other songs that use vocables for a great informance for your audience.
Island Spinning Song is available from the composer Donald Patriquin https://choralnet.org/contact/user/5762.
