Inclusiveness in Music Education

August 2, 2013 by Scott Dorsey Leave a Comment

An online survey is presenty underway that seeks information that will lead to a better understanding of how students with divergent needs are being included in music education environments.  This brief nine-question survey broadly investigates educators’ training, perception, involvement, and needs.

While the study aims to understand the state of inclusiveness in music education in the public school environment, the observations and experiences of music educators at all levels will be helpful.

Please, please PLEASE take the survey if it applies to you as a public school music teacher/conductor!  It makes such a difference in different learning ability students lives, not just in their school years…..but beyond.  Visit the Friends Of Joyful Noise ChoralNet Community to see how singing in choirs can…and should….continue after school is over.

And yes, I am touched by disability in my own life as the parent of a young man with autism who was a music inclusion student through high school because I insisted on it…..and it made a HUGE difference in his life. He had friends in his orchestra who insisted HE should be the senior student conductor on his last concert because he LOVED MUSIC SO MUCH! It isn’t just good for the special education student but for ALL the students.

Russell still loves music and it is part of his life every day…..and not just because his mother is a conductor or his brother is a concert pianist…….but because it is who he is.

Thank you Scott for posting this today.
