Most of us don’t have to opportunity to design our choral ensembles to fit the demands of a particular repertoire. We have to cook with what we have, so to speak.
There are, however, a small number of choral conductors who are able to function as specialists, leading ensembles that perform a very tightly defined body of repertoire. One such ensemble is highlighted in the short video here; in a performance from ACDA’s 2009 National Conference. According to their profile published in the January 2009 issue of the Choral Journal, this ensemble was developed “in order to explore and promote the compositional processes behind the great masterworks, and lesser known works, of the late medieval and early modern periods.”
If you won the lottery and could afford to design your own professional specialized ensemble, what would it do? Would you focus on Bach? Early music? Vocal jazz?
