There is no doubt that an honor choir is a wonderful experience for the students involved. The opportunity to study in an intensive environment with other select and highly-motivated singers under the baton of a master teacher can be life changing. (Truly, many of us in the choral profession can trace our “light-bulb” moment to our own early honor choir involvement.)
Moreover, these performances can be inspiring artistic experiences for the listener. Such is the case with this performance by the 2012 ACDA Southern Division honor choir.
I suspect that the Seventeenth-century German composer Hammerschmidt did not intend for this work to be performed by choir of well over 100 voices. Note however the delicacy and dexterity this very large choir is able to bring to bear in this performance – a feat made even more noteworthy given that they only worked together for a matter of a few hours.
