Illustrated Guide to a Ph.D.

I love this.
 
My professors at FSU were really good at explaining this hyper-narrowing of focus to me, in their own way. Still, I wish I'd seen Matt Might's explaination of the Ph.D. process then (or even better, before I'd left home for graduate school). I'm a bit thick-headed and, despite my professor's best efforts, maybe didn't totally get it until I was deep into the process.

  2. I recommend “How to Survive Your Ph.D.” by Jason Karp. It is very readable and contains a wide variety of “I can’t believe this is true” stories about what to expect, pitfalls to avoid, etc. It’s available at Amazon or directly from the author at http://www.runcoachjason.com/merchandise.

  3. I agree. THERE WAS NOTHING to outline ANYTHING in 1980 at Un of  Michigan. I was the first female in the DMA program. FINISHED all my course work, and then had a bump in the road. None of my choral directors had DMA or PHD but of course, years of experience. Then DMA were rather a new degree and no women earned them. Most were Ph D in Music Education. I would highly recommend using the illustrated guide before you give any more serious consideration to the next 3 – 4 years of your life.
