Listening to masterpieces of the standard choral repertoire is like visiting with a well-loved friend. There is a sense of instant familiarity, comfort, and kinship.
It is, however, critically important to remember (or perhaps to realize for the first time) that while a work may be well known to many in a room full of experienced choral directors, to the singers performing the piece, it is a new part of their journey of sonic discovery.
That may well be the case here with this performance by the Fountain Valley High School Troubadors (Kevin Tison, conductor) of two excerpts from the “Six Chanson” of Hindemith – “Un Cygne” and “Puisque Tout Passe” – during the American Choral Directors Association’s 2011 National Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
