A couple years ago I was pleased to make repeated treks to a local elementary school because the director of the school’s fifth-grade chorus asked for a little help in improving the esthetic quality of the group’s performance. Back on the college campus after one such jaunt, a member of the voice faculty sniffed derisively, “Why are you wasting your time doing THAT? Kids can’t really sing with any artistry!”
I am perpetually dumbfounded by those who turn up their noses at the work of our youngest singers. If it wasn’t for the stellar daily efforts of our colleagues on the elementary level (and middle level, and secondary level), those of us who teach collegiate singers would be doomed.
You can make up your own mind after listening to this performance by a children’s choir from a recent ACDA Divisional Conference.
