Johnson, Jaclyn M. Females Teaching High School Male Singers: Overcoming Vocal Differences. Master of Music thesis. California State University, Long Beach., 2011
This project report explores the vocal differences and difficulties many female teachers encounter when teaching high school male singers. It discusses the results of a nationally distributed survey to female choir directors who are currently or have previously taught high school male singers. An analysis of their answers is provided, as well as a discussion of problems they have encountered when teaching high school male singers and solutions they and other teachers have developed. The paper is designed to be a reference guide for female teachers entering the high school choral classroom, but can also be useful to experienced female teachers looking for additional teaching strategies they can apply in the classroom. The Appendix includes the survey questions, answer statistics, sample programs, and suggested repertoire lists for male chorus.
