Planning for the Fall: Choral Composer anniversaries in 2012 and 2013

June 30, 2012 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

I'm getting ready to start the planning process again for my 2012-2013 literature.  Most of you are probably ahead of me!

I am looking at the composer anniversaries in 2012 to help guide my selection of literature for the fall.

I consulted this list of the Top 5 Composer anniversaries in 2012 and decided that Debussy, Delius, and Gabrieli were definitely worthy of consideration. A more comprehensive list led me to Irving Fine, (I love that "Have you seen the white lilly grow), Hassler, Willaert, and Sweelinck.

The 2013 list gives us some wonderful choices as well:  Paul Hindemith, Francis Poulenc, Benjamin Britten, Norman Dello Joio, and even my friend Jaakko Mäntyjärvi turns 50 in 2013!

Hindemith and Poulenc are apparently on the list for the 50th anniversary of their deaths? I would add Horatio Parker (born 1863).

And don’t forget the first professional composer in the USA, Samuel Holyoke, born 250 years ago on October 15, 1762.  Here’s a link to six of his hymn tunes arranged as choral pieces:  Info page for “Salvation Shall Be All My Song:  Six Holyoke Hymns” at HohMade Music.com.

Thank you, Dr. Copeland! Another milestone that many are observing and honoring with music is Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation 150 years ago, on January 1, 1863.
