Make ACDA Better

June 14, 2012 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

The national leadership of ACDA recently met in Dallas to brainstorm the next direction for our organization.

One of the most important parts of that brainstorming was a survey that was recently distributed to the membership.

But let’s here from the ChoralNet participants:

What is ACDA’s biggest problem?

What one thing would you do to make ACDA better?

I agree with Richard – one of the things we repeatedly discuss at state meetings in Michigan is trying to reach our many constituencies. One thought I had is using the model of ChorTeach and publishing e-journals each month with a different R&S Area. It would effectively mean that every April I could expect a Women’s Choirs Newsletter, every November Vocal Jazz, etc. National, Divisional and State R&S Chairs could spearhead publication (only once a year!). A solid yearly journal for one R&S Area could well provide more depth and breadth than a year’s worth of articles in the Choral Journal, while retaining the CJ as the premiere published spot for choral research.

Philip, I don’t think it’s a problem, but I do think it is a challenge…  ACDA is trying to be all things choral to all people.  The field is somewhat fractured (but not in a bad way), with so many specializations, like children’s choir, church music, university, community, professional, high school, etc.  It must be difficult, keeping up with all that.  I don’t pretend to know how successful ACDA is at the task, or not successful, but it occurs to me, it is a huge undertaking, that demands extraordinary resources.
