What is the best way to leave the profession?

I’ve noted with respect the way LSU has said goodbye to longtime professor Ken Fulton as he retires this year.  They’ve celebrated his tenure with ceremony and class.  LSU also included him on the search committee to choose a new conductor.
 
It doesn’t always go that way, does it?
 
Sometimes there is no celebration and little recognition.  
 
LSU did it right.  A hearty congratulations to their administration, alumni, and students.
 
Ken, congratulations on a job well done.

  1. Ken Fulton is one of the great mentors in my life that inspired me to my commitment as a choral conductor. He was my choir teacher at Smylie Wilson Jr. High when I was in the 9th grade, and his encouragement and support boosted my vocal confidence. I remember watching him conduct, observing the way he held his hands and moved his arms. He and Joe Lars Klingstedt are the men who convinced me to be who I am today! Thank you, Dr. Fulton, for a career dedicated to students and great music; indeed, a career well spent!

    That’s great!
    You may also want to investigate, and celebrate, the retirement of Frances Fowler Slade – Princeton Pro Musica. (I believe the transition is that situation has also been positive.)  She has had an admirable career. Her first job (or nearly that) out of Wellesley was as my high school choir director here in Atlanta. 🙂  She was unforgettably instructive, challenging, inspiring, and delightful.  She still is!
