Choral Caffeine: Here’s What They Think of Choir

March 19, 2012 by Scott Dorsey Leave a Comment

The “Big Voice” project has been discussed by various commentators on ChoralNet.  Today, film-maker Varda Hardy gives us a chance to hear what the students at Santa Monica High School think about singing in a choir.

Sometimes, friends, amid the flotsam and jetsam of our hectic days, we tend to forget that we are impacting lives in an incredibly positive and worthwhile fashion.  Let’s pause for eight minutes, six seconds to recall – and celebrate – the humanity of our craft.

Jeffe, you are a wonderful teacher, human and friend!  It is exciting to see this film being made.  I am looking forward to your presentation this summer – share some of that wisdom with the rest of us.  🙂

Loved the video……it was very timely for me.  Especially, the choral director talking about the memories lasting a lifetime.  Yesterday, in my local paper–the Chicago Tribune–and here on ChoralNet in ChoralNet News, I was transported back to my high school choir room.  There was a news story about Renee Fleming and Yo-yo Ma visiting a Chicago high school–and it was MY high school, Lake View!  In the paper, there was a picture of them in  the choir room and I was disoriented before I realized they were at LV…..because I knew and felt that room….hard to describe….but surreal to say the least.

Anyway, this video helped put it in perspective for me……..HS helped shape me, and many others here on ChoralNet I would wager…..but even if they don’t go into music, the camararderie, discipline and sense of history and FUN of singing in choir will stay with them the rest of their lives. Those kids are very lucky to have a teacher who understands that–wonderful program and wonderful video!

Scott – Thank you.  Such articulate young people – great leader.  May they go from strength to strength.
