Happy birthday, Gioachino Rossini!

February 28, 2012 by Allen H Simon Leave a Comment

The guy didn't get that many birthdays: only 18 during his lifetime (remembering that 1800 wasn't a leap year), so we need to acknowledge it whenever we get a chance: today is his 51st birthday. (Update: 53rd. Somehow I missed 1888 and 1988.)

As they said to Frederic in another context:

Though you’ve lived twenty-one years, yet, if we go by birthdays, you’re only five and a little bit over!

A most ingenous paradox. Frederic's turning 3839 today.

I’m with Stephen on this one. If he was born in 1792,  2000 was the year of his fiftieth. On a similar theme, I had a good time singing Britten’s “A New Year Carol” in January, although the words are old enough to mean a new year on 25th March.

Maybe you were counting 1800 and 1900 as leap years? They weren’t.

    I make it 53rd, rather than 51st.

…and even more reason today to recall those unfortunate Swedish subjects who were born on 30 February 1712 and never celebrated a birthday in their lives:
