In his Choral Journal article, “Performing Choral/Orchestral Works with the High School Choir,” Paul Cappers discusses the valuse of such a performance:
“Performing a great work well with orchestra is an indescribable “high” for young musicians. Students feel a unique sense of accomplishment, and such a performance can bolster community support for the music program. The demands of the literature often foster improved music- reading skills, enhancing students’ musicianship for future work in high school and beyond. Appreciation of the major repertoire is an obvious but fundamental value for the total education of the choral student. Increased understanding of vocal phrasing as it derives from bowings and other instrumental articulations is yet another advantage. Performing major works requires research, score study, and careful planning, especially if orchestral accompaniment is utilized. The musical rewards for the students, however, are worth the conductor’s extra efforts. High school students have the capability and deserve the chance to experience the thrill of performing this important repertoire.”
