Stick Time: Three (only three?) Lessons From Chanticleer

September 21, 2011 by Scott Dorsey Leave a Comment

Yes, they are brilliant professional singers in one of the best ensembles on the planet. But each one of these fabulous singers started in a school choir somewhere.  And there was a director there working to help those kids sound great – just imagine who is singing in your rehearsal today.

Of the countless things these chaps do well, what three things can we incorporate in our rehearsals today?  A couple random thoughts:
[1]  It seems they don't just "know" the music, they have assimilated it.  It is part of their genetic code.
[2]  They are holding the tempo . . . even when they clap (always a terrifying moment for a choir).
[3]  The gents have taken OWNERSHIP. They're not waiting for someone to do their work for them.

John – adding a note to the “administrative side” in a comment to a Buzz post isn’t really the best strategy. Far better to utilize the existing venue for that, the “Website Suggestions” forum: https://choralnet.org/list/forum/256

After discovering the various e-mail problems yesterday, all resulting from ChoralNet’s server move, Martin Knowles posted a ChoralBlog item about that (which came after your note): “Missing your ChoralNet Mail? Have too much?” https://choralnet.org/view/295936

I’m just posting this for anyone who browses into the comments on this post.

    Peace,

Scott:  Actually some in Chanticleer started in their church children’s and youth choirs, when their school system had no “school choirs” worth blowing up!  That was the case with our two sons, one of whom is now a professional countertenor who toured with Chanticleer for four years.

On the administrative side, what the heck happened to ChoralNet this morning?  I woke up to about 200 ChoralNet messages, including at least 20 “Welcomes” to this Buzz thing, with the result that I’m NEVER going to take it seriously no matter what you do with it.  In fact I’d much rather not be bothered with your “Buzz” unless and until it actually involves some useful discussion.  Certainly not to the extent of having numerous “inspirational” message flooding my inbox every single day!!!!

    All the best,
    John
