ACDA will continue to work on strategic planning in the coming year, in next summer’s ACDA Leadership Conference in Dallas, TX, and then toward the unveiling of the new strategic plan at the 2013 ACDA National Conference in Dallas. Every leader and every member of ACDA will be asked to become involved in this planning. Look for your opportunity. In the meantime, as a choral leader, explore Don Adams’ article found on the National Endowment for the Arts website as you reexamine the mission of your own organization. Where are you going?
Mission is the raison d’etre for any organization. Mission is the reason you exist. Mission expresses the intentions of the founding mothers and fathers of an organization. Mission expresses what those framers wanted to achieve by starting the organization. AND, mission must be reexamined and refreshed periodically if an organization is to remain dynamic.
This past weekend, the National Leadership Board of the American Choral Directors Association met at the ACDA National Office in Oklahoma City to do the business of the Association, but to also move forward ACDA’s strategic planning process. Much of the time was spent in an environmental analysis of the Association–exploring staffing, facilities, financial information, and the nuts and bolts of how an organization does business. But the most exciting work took place in the final day of the meeting when ACDA’s leadership started to reexamine ACDA’s mission. It was at that point that the real energy and sparks started flying.
