Honduras President Bans Cell Phones at Meetings. Do you?

Recently, Honduras President Porfirio Lobo banned cell phones at all of his meetings, complaining that it was “a lack of courtesy” that the phones are ringing and beeping during the weekly two-hour Cabinet meeting.
 
One of my colleagues counts people as absent if he sees a person texting in class.
 
Another person has a “technology box” where all cell phones go during a rehearsal.
 
What is your latest strategy?

  1. I have an experience to share with you guys. Once I was in a remote place, my signal in my phone got jammed, i thought the problem would be with my service provider. After coming back home i gave black and blues to my customer care highlighting my issue. They pleaded me saying that the problem is not with them. Then i browsed through the search engine regarding my issue, i got a remedy for my cell phone, there i came to know the problem called signal jamming that is experienced in most cell phones.   2. College students are SUPPOSED to be adults.  (Whether that’s true is best left for a different debate!!)  Most professors discourage active use in class, sure, but I simply don’t get up tight about it and if someone REALLY needs to take an incoming call in a rehearsal it’s no different from needing to go to the bathroom.  I don’t hassle them and they don’t abuse the priviledge.  Anyone remember back when calculators were banned from classrooms?  Now they’re required!!
     
    Use during exams, on the other hand, is a different matter, since the opportunities for cheating are all too open.  But a simple announcement is usually enough.

  3. If a cellphone is heard during our rehearsal, the student is “awarded” a choral service hour.  I can’t remember when the last cell phone went off in the past 4 years.  I guess the kiddos aren’t into service these days.

  4. Our strategy is very simple: as the kids pick up their name buttons when they check in for rehearsal, they deposit their cell phone in a box. They are kept safe by our choir secretary, and when they return their name button they get their phone back after rehearsal. It has worked wonders!
