At this moment, our newest colleagues are stepping into their classrooms for the first time. These freshly-credentialed professionals are joining our ranks brimming with ideas, enthusiasm, and energy. But if truth be told, many of these good people are also apprehensive about their new lives.
To new colleagues . . . Welcome! We’re glad you have joined us in this wonderful, beautiful, occasionally nutty profession. Contrary to the way you feel right now, you are NOT alone; all of us are here to assist, support, and encourage you. (don’t hesitate to reach out!)
In his article, “Success and Youthful Choral Directors” (Central Division Resound, Winter 2010), Scott Buchanan shares a few thoughts with newer colleagues. His Letterman-esgue “Top Ten List” includes discussion of such things as:
[10] Stay Out of the Teachers’ Lounge
[9] You Are NOT Superman/Superwoman
[8] Join Your Professional Organization (hint: go to www.acda.org)
[7] Be Their Teacher, NOT Their Friend
[6] Get Off Your Island
[5] You Reach Out First
[4] Understand and Respect the Power of Athletics
[3] Learn to Play Golf
[2] Choose the Right Friends
. . . And No.1: Pick the Right Music
Whether a first year teacher, in the first year in a new job (a whole different sort of challenge) or a seasoned pro eager to stay fresh, Prof. Buchanan’s article offers valuable insight, and positive encouragement.
GOOD LUCK!
