I've never heard of World Voice Day before, an event created by voice doctors (initially in Brazil) to "raise awareness" of voice disorders. But in this morning's email I got a notice about a free voice screening for professional singers offered by a clinic in New York on this year's "World Voice Day".
The screening is evidently funded by MusiCares, a philanthropic arm of the Grammy people intended to help musicians in need, and participants in the free vocal screening in NYC have to be pre-qualified by MusiCares. It's not clear whether MusiCares would pay for any treatment if somebody gets diagnosed with nodes or whatever: maybe this ends up like one of those "free duct inspections" you get from a heating/cooling company which somehow ends up with you paying for duct cleaning.
In the meantime, Kate Peters recycles a list of voice care recommendations with cutesy slogans in honor of last year's World Voice Day:
- Embrace hydration
- Kiss but don't yell
- Hug a microphone when speaking in public
- Warm up your voice by saying a few sweet nothings
- Always clear the air, but don't clear your throat
- Go ahead and look hot, but never smoke
- Know what you're feeling
- Think good breath support, not just heavy breathing
- Be a good listener
- Check it out (if something's wrong medically)
There are a few more details if you click the link.
