Anticipating Chicago, and not just for choral music!

February 21, 2011 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

Paul Carey has a TASTY blog previewing Chicago for ACDA conference attendees.

There is much to read – here is a sampling:

So now let’s talk about all the signature (cheap) Chicago food you have drooled over while perusing your Chicago guide book. But just remember, you shouldn’t expect to fit in your skinny jeans if you eat this stuff every day: Chicago deep dish pizza, also sometimes called stuffed pizza: Well there are some pizza wars in Chicago. Lately they have been accusing each other of sneaking in cheaper ingredients. Maybe we need to give them all a time out. The usual heavy hitters are Lou Malnati’s and Gino’s East, but you also can’t really go wrong with Pizzera Uno, Giordano’s, Edwardos, or Nancy’s.

Chicago style hot dogs: these are kosher all beef dogs steamed but not made into blecky mush and served on a poppy seed bun, The standard toppings are mustard, raw chopped onions, pickle relish with plenty of neon green dye (the rest of the planet’s supply of neon green dye will go into the Chicago River for St. Paddy’s Day),tomatoes, a dill spear, sport peppers, and celery salt.

Italian Beef: This is a bit tricky to advise on since Italian Beef sandwiches vary in quality a lot even from the same joint. Best places to try: Mr. Beef on Orleans (666 N Orleans- there’s a devil of an address), Portillo’s at 100 W. Ontario and the #1 Al’s Beef at 16 W. Ontario. Some people love Al’s, some think it’s overrated – you decide. Oh, and if you order “juicy” or “dipped” you will need napkins, a whole bunch of them.

Paul has an advantage. He lives/lived here.

This local’s vote for pizza & other good food on the cheap is Exchequer Pub on Wabash Avenue. The brothers Jimmy, George & Tom & their staff will take good care of you. For great burgers, try Miller’s Pub, also on Wabash & next door to the Palmer House. Looking for something fancier/more expensive try Bistro 110 just across the street from the Water Tower & John Hancock or Chicago Chop House or Fleming’s for steak both in River North.

All of that is Paul Carey’s scouting . . . I’m glad he is doing the ground work!

I’m so excited you’re excited about our food.  And yes, this isn’t the time to be dieting–we don’t eat this stuff every day, either.

A few notes, from a native Chicagoan–NO CATSUP on the hot dogs, EVER! Don’t even think about it–I’ll know and call you out.  Every one has there favorite places for Dogs–I like Byrons on the Northside (I’m a Southsider now, but a Native Northsider).

To clarify–Deep Dish Pizza and Stuffed Pizza are two different things.  Both need to be eaten with a knife and fork.  We like thin crust as well but if you’re going to indulge, you might as well go for it. There is something special about a 40 minute wait for a pizza to make it worth your while and it is. I just had Lou Malnati’s Take-Out last night.  Like Sopranos everywhere, the best thing I make is reservations! I like all the Pizzeras mentioned–and my hips will prove it– but Lou’s is my favorite.

You can order Italian Beef “dry”–it won’t really be dry but not as sloppy as wet (or juicy or dipped).  And you can go hot or sweet with the peppers, your call–we don’t care! My advice is to compare and contrast–all good.

Philip, are you sure you haven’t done any scouting on your own?  This seems like you’ve been doing some research yourself……I’m just saying!

See you all soon.  Our Blizzard Snow has melted.  It would have been fun to watch y’all stare at the snow piles!

Back to the treadmill.  The Lou’s will be there forever if I don’t.

    Marie
