Choir Auditions with FileMaker Pro

July 9, 2010 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

A different sort of blog today – Leonard Ratzlaff uses FileMaker Pro to assist him in all facets of auditioning and he created a short presentation for ChoralNet users.

I uploaded the presentation to FileShare to show you:

I have developed a “full-service” set of FileMaker databases for choral administration, the Choral Management Package.  Better, it works on what’s called a runtime version, so you do not even need to buy FileMaker.  Of course, if you have FileMaker, it will also work.

    Marie,

We initially set up this program for re-auditioning the full choir, and the comments I made in each singer’s comment box would reflect the results of the audition.  I only had to turn down one or two returning singers in each re-audition we have done on this program (2005, 2009), so I didn’t feel the need for a separate category for new auditionees that didn’t make it.  In the case of new auditionees, we have not been sending out a full letter with the audition results, as that is quite cumbersome – just gave the results to our manager to let the applicants know what the results were.  The comments can still be made and are more for the conductor’s benefit at that point.

I thought this was very interesting.  Since I am in the thick of summer auditions for my chamber choir, anything to simplify and perhaps make the process a little easier for all concerned is what I was looking for.  I do everything–and much of the screens you use, I use but on paper–on paper, so not having to file everything and find a place for it would be great. I also keep track of who has auditioned and not made it so if they audition again, I can be aware of what I thought before.  I didn’t see anything like that–did I miss it?
