John Rutter Creates YouTube Channel

April 17, 2010 by philip copeland Leave a Comment

jrutter.jpgIn a move sure to be followed by all savvy composers, John Rutter has created a YouTube channel where he discusses his works.

In the first series of uploads, Rutter discusses his famous Requiem – he gives an overview and then goes movement by movement through the work.

More composers should do this – we want you to give us an online record of your thoughts and performances of your music.

Imagine your singers passionatly and knowingly arguing amoung themselves about which of John Rutter’s works has the best "Agnus Dei" as all my singers were able to do…and did, constantly? What a thrill!
Now, to have John speaking to these singers about his process and impulse is extremely touching and valuable.
I cannot count the number of performances of the Requiem which my choirs performed or I have conducted over my career. Each was a new experience which only deepened upon repetition. I am always reminded of our performances in response to the manifold tradgedy of local deaths of children and the shock and grief of the Columbine murders or the aftermath of 9/11. My students, in their private grief and fear, were able to console themselves and listeners by great music and comforting words. On 9/11 one student asked, "What do we do now? Go home and die?" My answer? No, we sing! And we sang John Rutter’s Requiem.
