Dan Kreider gives us another essay – this one about the essence of rhythm:
it’s essential that we transmit the essence of the indicated rhythm – not merely the mathematically correct moment for the musical events. The details of rhythmic units are usually easily identified and altered to convey the meaning behind their construction. Of course, the majority of rhythmic challenges can be solved by a disciplined subdivision of the beat – but that isn’t always enough. In this post, I’ll mention several of the rhythmic devices for which I feel it’s essential to consider altering to account for the perspective of the listener, so that the essence of the rhythmic devices is accurately conveyed. Remember: the goal is always communication.
