SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! SNOW!

It snowed in Birmingham yesterday and we all went predictably crazy.  Here in the south, we dismiss school at the mere suggestion of snow, not the actuality of it.  My school isn’t dismissing class, however.

I heard on the radio this morning that there was a run on generators this week – not because we are afraid of the snow, but because we don’t want to miss any part of the NCAA College Football Championship.  (disclosure:  i am a huge fan of college football).  The local weather man was warned by hundreds of football fans that he shouldn’t break into the game to warn about winter weather!  He issued an blog post to hold all the hate mail – look here!

As for me, I’m trying to prepare for an upcoming ACDA performance so I really need the rehearsal!  But another part of me wants to stay at home with my lovely family and enjoy the different weather.

I wish I had thought of this (see above). From the great Dave Walker.

Goodness – if we’d had 14 inches of snow, we’d shut down school for at least a week here in Ft. Worth, Texas! We had a little sleet early Wednesday morning and it got below 20 degrees(my backyard deck was frozen over but the roads and driveways were very drive-able) and we shut down school for the entire day on Wednesday. TV went to all weather panic coverage starting at 5:00 am. Oh, us southerners that don’t know how to handle weather! 🙂

    Hello Philip,

Like you, our community had snow yesterday.  I look out at the lovely landscape from the  warmth of my kitchen–the trees outlined in white, the deep red of a cardinal flying past and breathe slowly—how beautiful!  Wait a second……….I’ve snapped out of it……my son, Ben-the-pianist, tells me he is using my car to get to his rehearsal and has locked the keys in while he’s warming it up….darn!………..Okay, I’m back….hubby dropped off his set of keys and Ben is off to his rehearsal  Just a minute……..Diane-the-soprano wants to know if we have rehearsal tonight for our Sunday concert and I remind her of my email subject line of yesterday, “Mush, Doggies!  We have rehearsal tomorrow!”

I wish I could enjoy the beauty–and it is beautiful–but here in the Midwest, it is not so unique.  We deal with it and believe it builds character.  Many a politician has lost their primary bid for not plowing in a timely fashion.  Mother Nature often fools us.  The trick is to be prepared for it.  We have to soldier through, otherwise, for several months as year we would be stuck.  If and when things close down, it has to be pretty bad.  It’s not so bad today–‘only’ 14 inches–so we will have rehearsal tonight.

Marie, coming to you from the South Suburbs of Chicago
