ACDA Brock Professional Composer Competition Winner Announced

October 30, 2018 by Sundra Flansburg Leave a Comment

Dale Trumbore is the winner of American Choral Directors Association’s first Raymond W. Brock Competition for Professional Composers for her composition In the Middle. The work will be performed by the Aeolians (Jason Max Ferdinand, conductor) at the 2019 ACDA national conference in Kansas City, February 27-March 2, 2019. The composer will accompany the choir.

Trumbore (b. 1987) has been called “a rising star among modern choral composers” (AXS), and her music has been praised for its “soaring melodies and beguiling harmonies” (New York Times). Trumbore’s compositions have been performed widely in the United States and internationally.

How to Go On: The Choral Works of Dale Trumbore, Choral Arts Initiative’s album of Trumbore’s choral works, debuted at #6 on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Chart. Her music is available through Boosey & Hawkes, G. Schirmer, and MusicSpoke. Trumbore holds a dual degree in Music Composition and English from the University of Maryland and a Master of Music degree in Composition from the University of Southern California. A New Jersey native, Trumbore currently lives in Los Angeles, her home of nearly a decade, with her fiancé and their two cats.

The second place winner this year is Stephen Caldwell, for Pre-Existing Condition. Third place winner is John Mackey for The Rumor of a Secret King and fourth place is Elaine Hagenberg for Song of Miriam.

The Raymond W. Brock Competition for Professional Composers was established in 2018 in an effort to further the mission of ACDA to promote choral music and ensure its future. It is an outgrowth of the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission and Raymond W. Brock Student Composition Competition, both funded through the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Endowment, a fund established in 1991 to honor the life and contributions of Brock.
