The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus welcomes to its season finale the distinguished Mexican composer, Maria Granillo, for the world première of her “Ode to Fate” that sets a chorus from Sophocles’ tragedy, ANTIGONE. This is a high point in the choir’s program exploring issues of equity and equality through the music of Marie-Claire Saindon (“The Girl With The Numbers,” Melissa Dunphy (“Remember The Ladies”) and Undine Smith Moore (“We Shall Walk Through The Valley”). 19th century pioneers such as Fanny Hensel, Clara Schumann, and Agnes Tyrrell are represented through various lieder. Other works to note include Maya Angelou settings by Bob Chilcott and Mickey McGroarty, and reprises of past SLCC commissions from Howard Helvey and Ivan Moody. The venue is in the city’s Central West End at the historic Link Auditorium, original home to The Wednesday Club, a civic organization for women intent on education and social progress. Past members included writers such as Kate Chopin, Irma Rombauer and Sara Teasdale. Following the performance, the audience is invited to attend a reception to welcome Professor Granillo, and to celebrate the conclusion of the choir’s 70th season. Tickets and more information are available from the choir’s website.
