The Missa Gaia was composed in 1980.
Please see below about the history of the piece. It is also accurate on the internet.
In 1981, I was thrilled to be in the two performances of it in San Francisco. see below.
In 1980, Paul Winter was invited to compose a contemporary Mass for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Paul Winter set out to create a work that was both ecumenical and ecological, one that would embrace all the voices of the Earth. “EARTH MASS/MISSA GAIA was premiered on Mother’s Day, May 10, 1981, celebrating Mother Earth in Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. Composed by Paul Halley, Paul Winter, Jim Scott, Kim Oler, and Oscar Castro-Neves © 1981
Later that year (1981), Paul Winter and his consort performed the Missa Gaia in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco to a sold out audience.
It was the West Coast premier of the Earth Mass.
I was in the choir that performed in that spectacular event.
In April 2022, I produced two performances of Missa Gaia in Santa Rosa, California.
The choir was my wonderful California Redwood Chorale.
We had professional musicians playing the consort’s parts. Best of all, Jim Scott, one of the composers of the Earth Mass flew to California to perform with us.
