Kindness in Harmony: A Concert of Collaboration and Compassion

The Power of Kindness in Music | February 23, 2025 @ 3 PM at The Historic Old Madeleine Church, Portland, Oregon

In the world of music, collaboration is key. Whether you’re performing in a choir, an ensemble, or as a soloist, the ability to work harmoniously with others is essential. The act of making music is not just about technical skill; it’s about fostering respect, kindness, and understanding among those around you. At this special concert, we explore how kindness in music enriches not only the performance but also the entire creative process.

Join the Bravo! Chamber Choir and Elysium Quartet for a program that celebrates the power of music, kindness, and mutual respect. Featuring world premieres by Northwest composers and the timeless works of Johann Sebastian Bach, this concert demonstrates how music transcends boundaries, bridging genres like Classical, Jazz, and Spirituals.

The program opens with Jot – The Ultimate Light, a world premiere by Brazilian-born Portland jazz pianist Jasnam Daya Singh, inspired by his Sikh faith. The piece reflects the “Divine Light” through a blend of jazz and classical influences, performed by the Elysium Quartet (piano, clarinet, violin, cello).

Next, experience Cantata for a More Hopeful Tomorrow, a moving work by Portland Opera Music Director Damien Geter. Inspired by Bach’s Cantata #12, Geter’s composition merges Bach’s classical style with American spirituals, expressing the journey from fear to hope. Written during the pandemic, it offers a powerful message of resilience and hope.

Finally, the concert concludes with Bach’s Cantata #12, Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, a deeply emotional work reflecting on the sorrow and eventual joy that comes through suffering. This choral masterpiece captures the essence of human struggle and triumph, underscoring the importance of support and kindness in times of hardship.

This performance features the 16-voice Bravo! Northwest Choir, led by conductor Maria Manzo, and the Elysium Quartet, including Maria Manzo (piano), Tatiana Kolchanova (violin), Collin Oldham (cello), and Michael Kissinger (clarinet). Through this concert, we embrace the idea that kindness and respect among musicians make every rehearsal, every performance, and every collaboration more meaningful.
