Curated by resident conductor Judith Clurman, the Choral Society of the Hamptons presents “Grown on Long Island,” on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 5:30PM at the Avram Theater at SUNY Stony Brook. It celebrates the creative spirit of Long Island and the 80th anniversary of the Choral Society of the Hamptons.
The evening opens with the world premiere of I Hear America Singing, a new composition by Annie Pasqua (Dix Hills), set to the iconic poetry of Walt Whitman (West Hills), offering an uplifting tribute to American identity through a distinctly local lens. A centerpiece of Long Island’s musical legacy follows with And So It Goes by Billy Joel (Hicksville), presented in a new choral arrangement by Doug Katsaros (Manhasset), alongside a scene from Douglas Moore’s (Cutchogue) opera The Devil and Daniel Webster. Film music brings cinematic magic to the program with Double Trouble from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by John Williams (Floral Park), as well as a featured cello performance from Schindler’s List. Selections by Stephen Schwartz (Roslyn) continue the evening, including the New York premiere of Bloom (in a new arrangement by Ryan Nowlin) and When You Believe from The Prince of Egypt, both conveying messages of hope and inspiration. The concert concludes with selections from the Washington Women cycle, co-created by Judith Clurman (Hicksville) and David Chase, giving voice to influential figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, and Shirley Chisholm, and celebrating their lasting impact on American history. Additional highlights include a musical reflection on Sag Harbor and whaling songs, including a haunting a cappella arrangement by Ryan Nowlin of Shenandoah, featuring cello obbligato. Instrumentalists sharing the stage include Shane Schlag, piano and Coleman Itzkoff, cello.
