Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble presents “In the Time of Brahms: Music for Women’s Voices from the Master and his Friends ” on Sunday, March 26, at 4PM at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2005 Berryman St, Berkeley, and Saturday, April 1 at 7:30PM at St. Perpetua Catholic Church, 3454 Hamlin Ave. , Lafayette.
On the heels of the December concerts, which featured music by a dozen different US composers, all written since the mid-20th century, Voci turns its attention to 18th century Vienna and the exquisite music of Johannes Brahms. Brahms is the accepted master of choral writing in his time, and he had a special love of writing for women’s voices. The centerpiece of the concert will be Brahms’ Four Songs for Women’s Chorus, Harp and Two French Horns, a stunning masterpiece of choral and instrumental writing. The program will also feature a set of Brahms’ delightful and winsome Liebeslieder Waltzes accompanied by piano 4-hands. Two sets of lieder by Brahms’ dear friends, Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann will fill out the program.
