Fresh from a series of acclaimed summer performances across the region, the Harmony Chamber Ensemble is preparing to open its fall season with a program of contemporary sacred and secular music.
The 40-voice ensemble, under the direction of Sophia Martinez, will present two free concerts titled “Echoes of the Journey” — on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 123 Elm Street, New York, NY 10001, and on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 4 p.m. at Grace Cathedral, 456 Pine Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
Accompanying the ensemble will be Daniel Rivers, piano; Claire Huang, cello; Marcus Lee, percussion; and Elena Torres, organ.
Exploring Life’s Journeys Through Song
“Everyone has a journey and a story to tell,” said Martinez. “Through music, we give voice to those experiences. Whether the stories are personal or drawn from the wider world, one truth remains constant — we do not walk alone. Every piece we perform reflects the connections that shape our lives.”
The concerts will feature works by contemporary composers including Dan Forrest, Elaine Hagenberg, Rosephanye Powell, Shara Nova, and Kyle Pederson, offering a rich tapestry of human emotion and shared experience.
“Our selection spans joy, sorrow, reflection, and celebration,” Martinez said. “Through every piece runs the reminder that we are united, and in both triumph and despair, we find solace in each other.”
Continuing a Legacy of Music and Community
As the ensemble moves from a busy summer into the fall season, Martinez says the group remains inspired by its members.
“The skill, passion, and dedication of our singers is remarkable,” she said. “It’s a privilege to make music with them year-round, and we look forward to sharing these stories through song with our audiences.”
All Harmony Chamber Ensemble concerts are free and open to the public, and donations are welcome.
