Sacred & Profane has openings for voices in all sections (SATB), especially tenors. If you are an experienced singer with a healthy voice & a great attitude, please audition with us for this extraordinary 2016-2017 season.
Sacred and Profane’s 39th Season, “Waxing Poetic: A Celebration of Poetry” begins December 2016 with “A Poet’s Christmas”, the BBC Radio 1944 Christmas Eve Broadcast. Featuring poems by Cecil Day Lewis, Edith Sitwell, and W.H. Auden, and music by Benjamin Britten, Michael Tippett, Gustav Holst, and others. This exciting concert will also include the world premiere of works by our own James Tecuatl-Lee and the US premiere of Karin Rehnqvist’s “When I Cllse my Eyes, I Dream of Peace”.
March 2017 S&P present “If music be the foods of love, play on: Settings of Shakespeare”. The works of the “Bard of Avon” have inspired generations of composers to create some of our most charming choral works. In the second concert of our season dedicated to poets, Sacred and Profane explores the verse of the master. We will sing Shakespearean texts set to music by Thomas Morley, Amy Beach, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Frank Martin, and others.
May 2017 closes our season with “In Love with Language”. Sacred & Profane sings settings of poems by the great American poet Billy Collins, as well as settings by the Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2012 and died in 2015, among others. We will also celebrate the life and works of Lou Harrison, the renowned Bay Area composer who died in 2003. In collaboration with the East Bay ensemble Thingamajigs, We will present a new work in the style of Lou’s compositions for choir by Edward Schocker, as well Lou’s work Mass for St Cecilia’s Day. This concert will coincide with Lou’s 100th Birthday on May 14, 2017.
Concerts will take place in Berkeley and San Francisco. Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings 7:30-10 PM in downtown Oakland, with one additional Wednesday and one Saturday rehearsal per set. Dress rehearsals occasionally fall mid-week as well.

About Sacred & Profane
Founded in 1977, S&P is a chamber chorus that performs a wide variety of choral music. Concert repertoire includes sacred and secular works from the middle ages to the contemporary period, drawing from classical, ethnic, and folk traditions, with an emphasis on a cappella repertoire. We aim to provide an inspiring and educational experience for audiences and chorus members through innovative programming, intensive preparation and high quality performances. S&P is composed of approximately 24 singers (SATB), each bringing a high level of experience & musicianship to the chorus.
