Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Cherry Hill, NJ is seeking interested college students or young professionals to audition for the 2016-2017 Choral Scholars Program. High school students who are a part of their school’s music program and will be in their junior or senior year may also apply. All voice parts are welcome to apply, however, we have an exceptional need for a soprano and a tenor.
This program is designed to offer the opportunity for young people to be introduced to a high volume of great, eclectic choral literature in the church setting including everything from Tallis to John Rutter, work alongside a group of 15-20 volunteer singers while gaining proficiency in sight reading and ensemble skills. It is expected that our choral scholars will be interested in providing musical leadership to the ensemble by assisting with sectional rehearsals (piano skills are a plus), and, if interested, by choosing solo repertoire to present during the services or special events throughout the season. A recital for the Choral Scholars will be scheduled in Spring 2017 as well as a masterworks concert in December 2016 which would allow for other solo opportunities.
Choral Scholars must:
Have excellent sight reading skills and vocal ability in a choral setting
Attend Thursday evening rehearsals from 7pm-9pm
Attend Sunday morning service (10:30am-11:45am) with a pre-service rehearsal at 9:30/45
Have a positive, supportive attitude and a willingness to learn
Singers will receive a $1000 stipend for the year (September – June) paid in monthly installments. The choir sings for services each Sunday morning from September through mid-June, as well as occasional special service such as Christmas Eve and Maundy Thursday.
To schedule a meeting and audition, please contact SAUMC Director of Music, Katharine Baer at or by contacting the church office directly at 856-429-4469. Auditions are open until the positions are filled.
