*****
John Corigliano (1938- ). Fern Hill
In Fern Hill, New York composer John Corigliano beautifully sets Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ (1914-1953) reminiscences of his childhood visit to an aunt’s farm, and Thomas’ musings on his own life. The lush tonality of the music matches the richness of the words. Fern Hill is one of the most important American choral works of the 20th century and a beautiful work with which to celebrate John Corigliano’s 80th birthday.
Eric Whitacre (1970- ): Five Hebrew Love Songs and This Marriage
Eric Whitacre is one of the most well-known and successful contemporary American composers. His music has charmed and moved audiences all over the world. He composes in a variety of styles, and we have selected two works that demonstrate these styles. In Five Hebrew Love Poems, Whitacre sets Hebrew poetry written by his wife, operatic soprano Hila Plitmann (1973- ). This Marriage is an a cappella setting of a Rumi text about marriage, a gift from Whitacre to his wife.
Ola Gjeilo (1978- ): Luminous Night of the Soul and Song of the Universal
In Luminous Night of the Soul, Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo (1978- ) collaborates with American poet Charles Silvestri (ca. 1965- ) on a poem about the spirit that inspires all art. Gjeilo turns to a Walt Whitman (1819-1892) text in Song of the Universal that speaks of all humanity and the universal spirit.
