The Music Ministry at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC offers a vibrant, diverse musical experience to its members. Section leaders are contracted to serve as soloists as needed, and in ensemble with our 80-voice Chancel Choir, 24-voice a cappella Chamber Singers, and as needed in our other six adult vocal ensembles. Regular attendance at weekly rehearsals, as well as two to three Sunday worship services each week, is expected. These positions are open to college undergraduates as well as seasoned professionals. Competitive pay rates are offered.
Highlights of our Chancel Choir’s activities have included leading worship at Duke Chapel, Wesley Chapel (London), and Evensong at Bristol Cathedral (UK). Making their European debut in the summer of 2013, followed by a second tour in 2015, the Chancel Choir presented full concerts at Christ Church (Oxford), Bristol Cathedral, and Bath Abbey in the United Kingdom, Salzburg Cathedral and St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Vienna) in Austria, and St. Giles Church (Nymburk) and The Church of the Holy Savior (Prague) in the Czech Republic. In 2016, the choir performed Haydn’s Creation, which included the commissioning of seven new pieces of art, representing the seven days of creation, in support of UMAR, a United Methodist organization which works with adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 2017, the choir mounted a production of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass of Peace, with chamber orchestra and lighting effects, which they took on the road to The Riverside Church of the City of New York. Most recently, the choir completed a nine day tour of Scotland, with performances at Iona Abbey and St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. A trip to Italy is planned for May 2021. The Music Ministry has released a professional quality CD and has other CD releases planned. Each year our ministry offers free Christmas Concerts with a 100+ voice choir and full symphony orchestra for an audience of over 1500.
