The North River Sing Community Chorus announces new member auditions for our 2017-18 season. Led by Music Director Conrad Chu, we are a 35-member mixed choir devoted to the Great American Songbook. Founded in 2014, our mission is to provide an outlet where friends and neighbors in Jersey City, Bayonne, Hoboken, and NYC who love to sing – and who love Broadway show tunes and jazz standards in particular – can promote this incredible music as a community and lift the spirits of audiences throughout the region by staging charitable performances free of charge. We have raised our voices in multiple venues both in Jersey and NYC, including a recent public appearance at the Oculus near the World Trade Center.
We rehearse Sunday evenings from 5:45 to 8:00 pm at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in downtown Jersey City. While some of our members do have trained voices and choral experience, no formal training or ability to read music is required. Auditions are held simply to ensure that members can sing on pitch and maintain harmonies and to identify one’s vocal range. They are very friendly and relaxed.
Auditions will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 from 7 to 9 PM and on Tuesday, August 1st from 7 to 9 PM. The location is at 64 Wayne Street in downtown Jersey City, a few blocks from the Grove Street PATH station. It is a private home located between Grove and Barrow Streets.
Auditionees are invited to prepare a solo of your own choosing (any genre) that shows off your range and musical style. An accompanist is available. Then you’ll be asked to sing the first two verses of “Amazing Grace” (in any key you like) while accompanied by our music director on piano. You’ll then be taught a few bars of simple harmony which you will sing back (while accompanied by the main melody on the piano).
