VOICES is an auditioned chorus and chamber ensemble group of amateur and professional singers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. VOICES mission is to deepen the public appreciation of vocal music by performing outstanding choral music at a high artistic level and by supporting the creation of new works. VOICES is proud to hold the annual Children’s Composer Project, where we encourage young musicians age 5-12 to compose music and lyrics that is performed by VOICES. We support diversity in music by collaborating with groups such as the Trenton Children’s Choir and The Absalom Jones Inspirational Choir of Trinity Cathedral in Trenton, New Jersey. Our outreach choir performs in facilities for the mentally and physically disabled.
VOICES Choral Scholars are upper classmen and graduates who provide leadership and support for dedicated adult singers, and may also share areas of expertise such as vocal technique, pronunciation, or sectional leading. Choral Scholars have good music reading skills and enjoy work with skilled volunteer singers. There are six positions open for 2016-17.
The ideal candidate is a recent graduate with a major or minor in voice, music education, or conducting. Past choral scholars have said they regard working with VOICES as a grounding experience which reminds them of why they’ve pursuing music. They value the career experience and collaboration, plus it’s fun!
Rehearsals are Monday nights from 7:15pm – 9:30pm in Hopewell, NJ, with an optional chamber chorus rehearsal on some Tuesdays. Concerts are on weekend evenings or Sunday afternoons. VOICES performs 5-6 major concerts and several outreach programs a year.
Stipends are paid for rehearsals and concerts, slightly higher for graduates than for upperclassmen.
