Saint Barnabas Catholic Church of Omaha has openings for two sopranos and a countertenor for its principal parish choir. These professional positions require exceptional intonation, strong sight-reading, extensive choral experience, affinity for music composed before 1750, and a cooperative, positive approach to music making. The sopranos should have bell-like, blending voices with a true soprano range. The countertenor should be in the British falsettist tradition rather than the haute-contre style. The choir’s repertory centers on polyphony in English and Latin, Gregorian chant, and classical hymnody. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings and sing one Sunday morning Mass, Sunday afternoon evensong once or twice monthly, and holy days such as All Saints, Ash Wednesday, etc. Compensation ranges from $45 to $60 per appearance, based on experience and skill, with 115 planned appearances for the 2018-2019 academic year. Availability for Christmas Eve and Holy Week is a firm requirement. Singers are treated with respect and great appreciation by the director, congregation, and clergy.
