Anglican chant is a Victorian musical creation. The words of a specific psalm are married
to a harmonized chant or chants which reflect the mood and message of the psalm. The
manner in which the words are fitted to the chant is known as pointing. English organist
and composer Sir William Harris (1883-1973) was Organist of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor
from 1933-1961. French organist Alexandre Guilmant toured the United States. Among the
organs he performed on was the instrument at the St. Louis Exposition. That instrument is
now the core of the Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia.
