English composer William Byrd (1543-1623) published Ave Verum Corpus in Volume
One of his Gradualia in 1605. The two volumes of Gradualia comprise an extensive
collection of music for the Roman liturgy which was outlawed when Byrd wrote his music.
English composer Sir Arthur Sullivan tried to replicate his success with the Savoy operas
in other musical forms such as oratorios and symphonies. Sadly the only two hymn tunes
which Sullivan wrote which are still in current use are Lux Eoi for “Alleluia! Alleluia! Hearts
to heav’n” and St. Gertrude for “Onward, Christian soldiers!” American organist Dr. Robert
Noehren (1910-2002) was both performer and organ builder.
