The mixed voices choir of Clare College was founded in 1971. Chanticleer
is one of America’s very few professional choral ensembles. It is based in San
Francisco. Sir Edward Elgar was a devout Roman Catholic. We are fortunate
that he wrote several sacred motets and anthems such as this exquisite Ave Maria which we shall hear this morning.

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford was one of the original founding professors
of the Royal College of Music which was established in 1882. It is Canada
Day on July 1, hence the inclusion of some music by Dr. Healey Willan on
the playlist. John Ireland’s setting of the Passiontide hymn “The Royal Banners
Forward Go” is scored for soprano, alto, tenor, bass, chorus, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones & organ.

The Zemel Choir was founded in 1955. It is one of the premiere mixed
voice Jewish choirs. Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was organist of the
Marienkirche, Lübeck from 1868 until his death.

Schubert writing an oratorio? It seems as though we will never know precisely what
Schubert had in mind. The two acts of his three act oratorio Lazurus give us a taste of
what might have been had Schubert not died so young.
