Orlando Gibbons was a chorister at King’s College, Cambridge during the time

his brother Edward was Master of the Choir. Trinity College Choir, University of

Melbourne, Australia, is one of that country’s finest college choirs. A sagbutt or

sackbut is the grandfather of our modern trombone. The cornett sounded like a

trumpet but was fingered like a recorder.

English composer John Ireland composed his tune Love Unknown for Samuel

Crossman’s poem in 1918. Herbert Howells wrote his ravishing setting of Psalm

42 “Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks” in one day on January 8, 1941. English

composer Matthew Locke (1621-1677) was a chorister at Exeter Cathedral under Edward

Gibbons.

pointing. The Huelgas Ensemble is a Belgian choral ensemble founded in 1971

by conductor Paul van Nevel. John Rutter was commissioned by the Texas Choral

Directors Association to write Open thou mine eyes. The text was written by Lancelot

Andrews (1555-1626).

Cathedral, London. Hungarian composer Janos Boksay (1874-1940) was active

as a musician and a politician. The Willis organ in Huddersfield Town Hall dates

from 1860. It was renovated in 1980 by Harrison and Harrison.
