Wells Cathedral Choir has been named the world’s top choir
with children by an international jury of music critics.
Gramophone magazine’s editor James Inverne said: “[the choir]
may be the oldest in the UK, but they have forged a reputation for
top class performances of new music.”
He added that kept them fresh and “feeds their inspiration”.
Organist and Master of Choristers Matthew Owens said the
accolade was a “wonderful Christmas present”.
“There’s a real buzz to the choir singing everyday. It’s an
incredible thing to be part of,” he added.
“It’s hard work, there’s quite a lot of rehearsal and it’s a big
commitment but it’s an amazing experience for the choristers and
all of us who work here.”
A boys children’s choir has been a part of the cathedral since
909 AD, and girls were allowed into the choir in 1944.
Children aged between 8 and 14 practise every weekday and on
Tuesday and Friday they take part in the evening song.
“Cathedral choristers are a small group of children that work as
professionals.
“They have incredible experiences such as broadcasting live on
radio and going on tour – we were in the Netherlands, was in the
Hague doing concerts.
