U.S. conductor to lead Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir

December 8, 2010 by Richard Allen Roe Leave a Comment

Taipei, Nov. 24 (CNA) American choral conductor Andre Thomas,
who is revered for his work with spiritual and gospel music, will
lead the Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir in a concert in Taipei
Nov. 29.

“I am thrilled about what I heard about the Taipei choir, how it
has grown and developed. I am expecting a lot from them,” said
Thomas at a press conference in Taipei Wednesday.

Thomas said the Taipei trip is special for him because in the
1970s when he was working on his doctoral degree in Chicago, he met
a young man from Taiwan — Dirk Du Hei, now the artistic director
of Taipei Philharmonic Foundation — and coming to Taiwan always
reminds him of the young Dirk and the beginning of their artistic
paths.

It will be Thomas’ first time directing a Taiwan choir.

At the concert, 35 singers will present 14 songs that range from
standard western music to spiritual and gospel pieces, written by
various composers from around the world.
