I Shall Not Live In Vain: Taking a cue from the contrapuntal masters of the Baroque and Classical tradition, Matthews has crafted three short choral fugues that are sure to delight both choirs and audiences alike. Each fugue sets a different stanza of this popular Dickinson poem allowing the music and text to come together in a way not often seen in today’s choral writing. The polyphonic style allows for each vocal section to shine while at the same time showing off the talents of the entire chorus as one cohesive group. This title would be equally effective with small or large ensembles.
Death Be Not Proud: This setting of John Donne’s powerful Holy Sonnet X is full of rich harmonies, recurring melodic motives, and interesting textural variety just as a text of this stature would demand. Careful attention to voice leading makes the music accessible to a wide range of choirs and the subject matter of Donne’s poem would be appropriate for a number of occasions.
