EUGENE, OR — For the California Baptist University Women’s Choir, the only sour note Wednesday night came after their hourlong performance at a south Eugene church had ended. As the 92-member college group filled Cascade Presbyterian Church with vocal harmonies, thieves snuck into the choir’s dressing rooms and emptied the singers’ wallets — to the tune of nearly $2,000.
“The rooms were unlocked, and someone went down there and took the money while we were singing,” choir member Haley Helfer, 22, said. “Afterward, one of the girls came up to me and said, ‘We have a serious problem.’ ”
Officials at the church at 3350 Willamette St. called Eugene police, who responded to the scene and took a report. No suspects have been identified, police said. In addition to the cash, one group member’s debit card was stolen, Helfer said. While the thievery upset some choir members, they stayed true to their beliefs and prayed together for the criminals, Helfer said.
