Among the most dramatic musical works from the early Renaissance is the setting of the St. Matthew Passion by the English composer Richard Davy (1465–1507). Preserved incomplete in the Eton Choirbook, it has been reconstructed by Quire’s Artistic Director, Ross Duffin, and the original Latin words replaced by the English translation of William Tyndale, a contemporary of Davy at Magdalen College, Oxford.
The concerts take place on and around Palm Sunday, adding to the observance of Holy Week, which precedes Easter. But whatever your beliefs, you will be moved by the expressiveness and beauty of this extraordinary work.
The performances also include Sheryngham’s Ah Gentle Jesu, an exquisite Easter carol from the same period.
Get in the mood for this program with a visit to Quire’s YouTube channel, for “Qui petis, o fili?” by Davy’s contemporary Richard Pygott, among Quire Cleveland’s nearly 200 performance videos.
