Hello,
I would like to present to you one of the greatest masterpieces of the 17th century French school of music:
the Te Deum (text: hymn of Saint Ambrose and Saint Augustine, approx. 45:00)
by Jean-Baptiste Lully
New published by the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles with bilingual introduction (editor: Louis Castelain).
At least for 5 soloists (SSATB) [2 trebles, high tenor, tenor, bass], a 5-voice choir (SATBB) [trebles, high tenor, tenor, baritone, bass], a string orchestra, two trumpets, and a positive organ.
Lully composed this work in 1677 for the baptism of his son, which was attended by the child’s godparents, Louis XIV and Queen Marie-Thérèse. The king is said to have found the work:
‘so beautiful that he requested that it be played again’
Brilliant and majestic, this Te Deum subsequently accompanied many celebrations (royal wedding, military victory, and so on).
